In similar fashion to Aphex Twin’s effort last year with Syro, Squarepusher produces another solid album without pushing any particular boundaries or venturing into unfamiliar territory. The beats are as intricate as ever, whilst the melodies, as sporadic as they are, retain the classic Squarepusher charm. Whilst it’s not for the faint-hearted, Damogen Furies is a well-focused release from one of electronic music’s most respected artists, and it’s well worth exploring.

It’s too abrasive to be my bag. If I were tuned just a little differently I suspect Damogen Furies would really push my buttons, but I’m not, so it doesn’t. The music’s more than fine, meticulously mixed; I’m just not sure I want to listen to it ever again. That said, I sincerely look forward to hearing some of Squarepusher’s softer sounds in the future.

Damogen Furies is not what I expected to hear given the few Squarepusher tracks I’ve heard. It’s very manic and doesn’t give the listener much of a break. For me, the album started off strongly, and there are definitely some stand out tracks here, but other tracks felt more like a jam that you’d relish during a live performance, not in the middle of an album. I appreciate the complexity of Damogen Furies, and some of the beats and melodies are great, but Squarepusher didn’t quite hit the spot for me as much as I’d hoped.
