Thank goodness that’s over. Article-heavy focus last month, looking back on the year and sharing our thoughts on its delights, as well as its disappointments. Although we weren’t exactly been enamoured with most of last year’s releases, there was still plenty to like. It seems fitting that our one review in December, of Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!”, left us baffled and mildly frustrated.

Still, a new day is dawning. There’s probably plenty to look forward to. Hope springs eternal. Happy new year.

Childish Gambino // “Awaken, My Love!”

The album boasts a lush, colourful sound, drawing from elements of funk and soul to create an impressively modern vibe. Structure and delivery is where it all falls down. Even at its best the album is like watching Hamlet performed by Kermit the Frog.
